When Allison and her family began exploring retirement living options for her father in Etobicoke, they weren’t sure what to expect. Allison’s father, now a resident at Delmanor Prince Edward, has lived there for the past two years. We recently spoke with Allison, who shared what the experience has been like for her father and for the whole family.
What Made the Family Consider Retirement Living?
After Allison’s mother passed away, her father was left alone in the family home. The house was becoming more expensive to maintain, and he was growing more isolated.
Distance made it harder. Allison could only visit once a week, and those visits left little time to simply be together.
“I would only be able to visit once a week due to the distance, and I would spend six to seven hours there. The entire time I would be doing chores: cleaning the kitchen, cooking for him, weeding the garden, arranging for someone to shovel the snow. Things like that. It was a huge task. And I never had the chance to spend quality time with him and hang out.”
Allison wanted her father to have the care he deserved. She also wanted to ease her own load and, most of all, enjoy real time with her dad again. So she started looking online for a place he could call home.
Why Did the Family Choose Delmanor Prince Edward?
For Allison and her father, the decision came down to location, community feel, and word of mouth.
Delmanor Prince Edward is one kilometre from Allison’s house. “It is right in the middle of a neighbourhood, and you get that community feel,” she says. “The other ones we looked at were on urban roads, not in prime real estate.”
Having her father so close has changed how the family spends time together.
“It’s just a game changer to have my father a kilometre away. I walk. Instead of only being able to visit him once a week and doing a big drive, I can pop in many times a week, even just for 30 minutes. Having him so close is emotionally and logistically beneficial.”
How Did the Family Approach the Move?
Allison felt excited about the move. Her father felt positive too, although leaving the family home was a big adjustment for him. To make the transition easier, the family took it one step at a time:
- Settle in first, sell later. Allison moved her father into Delmanor Prince Edward first, made sure he was settled and happy, and then turned to selling his house.
- Keep a familiar face. The caregiver who had helped her father at home twice a week continued to visit him after the move.
- Meet a Resident Ambassador. When he arrived, he was paired with a Resident Ambassador who helped him adjust. Allison says it was a great match.
How Has Life Changed Since the Move?
For Allison: Quality Time Instead of Chores
The biggest change for Allison is time. Every Saturday and Sunday, she meets her father for the breakfast buffet. Afterward, they sit together in the lobby and listen to the piano player.
I am no longer doing chores, so I can visit him. It was such a stress on me, and I didn’t have quality time with my father, and now I do.
For Her Father: Friends, Routine, and Activity
Allison has seen a real change in her father. Where he was once isolated, he now has friends. He no longer eats meals alone in an empty house. He dines among friends in a social setting, and he uses the exercise bike in the gym every morning.
For the Whole Family: Easier Visits and Gatherings
Her father also sees his grandchildren more often. When they visit, they play pool together in the common room.
Family gatherings are easier too, because Delmanor does the hosting. For the past two Christmases, Allison’s family has rented the dining room for their holiday meal. Allison held her 60th birthday party there as well.
It’s fabulous. We just love it. The food is delicious. My dad doesn’t have to go anywhere to have a family meal. It is so convenient what Delmanor offers.
What Is the Best Thing About Delmanor Prince Edward for Allison’s Family?
For Allison, it comes down to two things: the quality of life her father now has, and spending her time with him instead of on chores for him.
Practical support has also lifted a weight from the family.
Delmanor has solved so many problems for our family. Every time my dad had to go to a doctor’s appointment, I had to take time off work. And he has to get blood tests done every two weeks, and they do it for him on the second floor. I don’t have to drive out to the house and take him. They have LifeLabs in-house. It is a total game changer.
