Retirement vs. Long-Term Care: Key Differences

Category:
Community:

Navigating senior living can be complex, especially when understanding the distinction between retirement living and long-term care, often referred to as “nursing homes.” Delmanor Prince Edward’s Community Relations Manager, Paula Suitor, sheds light on these key differences:

Care

In retirement living, at least two care services are typically offered, tailored to the needs of independent seniors or those requiring varying levels of assistance, including memory care. Long-term care, on the other hand, caters to more complex needs, often necessitating 24/7 nursing and supervision.

Cost

Retirement living costs vary and are privately funded by residents, regardless of the level of care provided. These costs can increase as care needs change. In contrast, the government covers long-term care costs for all care services, with residents only responsible for the rent of the room.

Move-In Process

Retirement residences require a complete health assessment prior to moving in, allowing older adults to choose a community and suite based on availability and matching their desired needs. In contrast, access to long-term care requires an assessment by Ontario Health at home (a branch of Ontario’s health system) to determine eligibility. Seniors can select up to five preferred homes and must decide within 24 hours if a room becomes available.

Amenities

Retirement residences can offer a wide range of amenities such as a gym, theatre, spa, pool, and recreation programs that vary by property, often as private accommodations. Long-term care facilities typically offer more multipurpose amenities and commonly feature shared accommodations.

“Understanding these differences can help you or your loved one navigate the complexities of senior living and guide you or your loved one toward the most suitable option when planning for the future,” concludes Paula.
